What makes mobile RPG progression feel good, not grindy
Every mobile RPG promises you'll get stronger. The difference between the good ones and the exhausting ones is whether that growth feels earned or just handed out to keep you tapping.
Good progression gives you decisions. In Emberfall Saga, choosing which mercenary to level shapes how your fights play out, so the numbers going up actually mean something. Bad progression just multiplies your damage and hopes you don't notice you're doing the same thing.
Watch out for games that gate story behind arbitrary power walls. If a title suddenly demands you replay old content ten times to continue, that's a design choice made for retention, not fun. I bail on those quickly now.
My rule of thumb: if I can explain what my last hour of play changed about how I play, it's healthy progression. If the answer is only 'my numbers are bigger,' I start looking for the exit.
None of this is about being hardcore. Even a cozy game like Greenhollow Days has progression, it just measures it in windmills fixed and neighbours befriended instead of raw stats.
